Sudanese army restores back al-Teinah city to the west of the country
Sudan, Politics, 1/31/2004

The Sudanese army stressed yesterday that it has restored control on al-Teinah city, to the west of the country, and several towns and municipalities the rebels in Darfour had controlled.

The Sudanese radio said quoting a statement for the Sudanese army that the government forces expelled the rebels from the town, which is situated on the two sides of the Sudanese- Chad borders, and also restored back 7 sites used to be under the control of the rebels.

The statement indicated that the army restored back security in the city, adding that this operation is a present for the Sudanese people on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.

A Chad's military source announced on Thursday that the government forces entered the city and tightened its control on it, noting that the city was evacuated several weeks ago from its people because of the bombardment in which Antonove planes were used.

The Doctors Sans Frontier organization said that the Sudanese army bombarded the Chadian part of the city and three civilians were killed as a result, including a two- year old infant and 14 wounded.

Worthy mentioning that this is the first clash which is registered in the Chadian lands since February 2003 when armed confrontations took place between the rebel groups and the government's forces in Darfour.

Since the beginning of the rebellion in Darfour, which asks for economic development for these desert estates, which it described as "margined," the fighting resulted in killing 3000 persons and the evacuation of 670,000 into inside Sudan and other 100,000 into Chad.
