Medicine museum at Al-Sakakini Palace to open soon
Egypt, Local, 1/29/2004
Al-Sakakini Pasha Palace, one of the most beautiful palaces in Cairo, is currently undergoing restoration and will open its doors to the public soon.
The museum will be dedicated to the development of medicine in Egypt from the time of the pharaohs to the present day and will display medical tools found during excavations, as well as papyri describing prescriptions for various illnesses and details related to surgery and dentistry.
Information on mummification will also be found in the museum since embalming was one of the medical branches in ancient Egypt.
Mahmoud Mabruk, Head of the Museums Sector at the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), said that the ancient Egyptians managed to diagnose around 93 diseases and find treatments for them including cardiac diseases.
The idea of turning the palace into a museum was initiated when a grandson of the original owner, who was a doctor, donated his inherited share of the place to the Ministry of Health.
