Britain is ready to cancel Sudan's debts after peace
Sudan-UK, Politics, 1/29/2004

The Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said that Britain is ready to drop the Sudanese debt after reaching a final peace agreement between the government and the southern rebels.

The Sudanese minister said that the British prime minister Tony Blair showed his country's readiness to drop the Sudanese debts after reaching a peace agreement. This was expressed in a message he had sent to the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

Ismael said in statements issued by the Sudanese official daily al-Anbaa yesterday that Blair congratulated al-Bashir over the progress of peace negotiations expressing readiness to contribute in this process by dropping the Sudanese debts.

The diplomats at the British embassy in Khartoum Mark Brison explained that the volume of Sudan's debts is estimated at 869 million dollars.

Ismael said that the government's delegation will return back to Nevasha's negotiations on February 17th with a greater determination to finalize an agreement.

Negotiations between Khartoum and the southern rebels were suspended because of the approaching of Eid al-Adha (holiday) and the chairman of the Sudanese government delegation, (First) Vice President Ali Othman Taha performance of al-Haj rituals.

On January 7th the government of Khartoum and the people's government signed in Kenya an agreement to share oil and non-oil wealth, especially tax revenues for the southern areas, shared between the two sides.

The two sides have only left before them to reach a final agreement that settles differences on Eibi area and Authority sharing. The agreement ends a civil war that has lasted for more than 20 years.
