Washington transports nuclear related items and documents from Libya
Libya-USA, Politics, 1/28/2004
The White House has announced that a shipment plane carrying 55 tons of equipment and sensitive items used in nuclear and missile programs in Libya landed on Monday evening in Knoxville, Tennessee, coming from Tripoli.
The spokesman for the White House described this step as a genuine progress towards dismantling nuclear weapons related programs. But he indicated that despite that, it is premature to lift the sanctions imposed by the US on Libya, as there are other steps that should be followed.
The spokesman explained that this operation was made in the course of the efforts carried out by the US and Britain to help Libya in dismantling this program. The Libyan leader agreed in December 2003 to give up the weapons of mass destruction program.
This announcement was made while a delegation representing the American parliamentary council ended a visit to Libya on Monday which was the first since al-Qathafi assumed power in 1969 during which members of the delegation met with the Libyan leader and visited the Libyan nuclear related facilities.
The announcement also coincided while al-Qathafi's speaking in an interview with the Italian magazine La Republica issued on Monday that there is actually a cooperation between the intelligence department in the two countries against extremists including partisans of the Taliban movement.
