Inter- Sudanese peace talks in Kenya suspended
Sudan, Politics, 1/27/2004
The negotiating Sudanese delegations at Nivasha resort in Kenya announced that peace talks between the rebels and the Sudanese government would be suspended later yesterday, so as to permit Khartoum's chief negotiator to travel in order to perform al-Haj religious rituals.
The official at the Sudanese embassy in Kenya, Ahmad al-Dardeiri, said that the talks will be suspended in order to permit Ali Othman Muhammad Taha, the first deputy for the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to travel to Sudan in order to perform al-Haj rituals.
The date during which the talks will be suspended was not announced and no comment was made by the southern rebels, which is negotiating with the government in Kenya since more than one year in an attempt to end the civil war in the country.
The Sudanese government and the southern rebels agreed over the situation of two of the three margined areas in the downtown of Sudan. Discussions are still underway over the third area which is Eibi.
The spokesman for the southern rebels, Yasser Araman, said that the two sides agreed the two areas would enjoy self rule and form a people's consultation commission. The movement calls for controlling the al-Nouba mountain, the Blue Nile and Eibi despite the fact it is geographically not part of the south where the movement is positioned.
The Sudanese Foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said that the government and the southern rebels eliminated points of differences in al-Nouba mountains and southern Nile, and are embarking on dealing with Eibi issue so as the two sides will be able to negotiate over the issue of sharing the authority, noting that the talks will be suspended, to be resumed from the point they had stopped at after Eid al-Adha (holiday).
