al-Youm: Three Yemenis were killed in a land mine explosion
Yemen, Local, 1/26/2004
Three Yemenis were killed in a land mine explosion near the port of Aden, in the southern part of the country, which was declared recently as an area free of land mines.
The Yemeni independent daily al-Youm explained that the three men were killed as they were passing over a land mine implanted since the civil war in the Summer of 1994.
Earlier this month, the Yemeni authorities announced that the province of Aden and the surrounding area are free from land mines.
The authorities indicated that a program sponsored by the UN to dismantle land mines from other parts of the country will continue until the whole parts of Yemen are dismantled from it. Explosives, however, claimed the lives of scores of Yemenis.
Thousands of landmines were implanted in Yemen during a civil war that lasted for two months in 1994 and erupted when leaders of the former Southern Yemen tried to form a separate new state.
