Syria denies receiving Iraqi weapons before the war
Syria-USA, Politics, 1/26/2004

The Syrian minister of information, Ahmad al-Hassan, denied American accusations over transferring Iraqi weapons to his country before the beginning of the war against Iraq in March 2003.

In statements to press after his meeting with a group of Iraqi artists who visited Damascus, the Syrian minister said these are "mere lies and are groundless." He explained that Washington seeks through these accusations to mislead and cover its failure to find mass destruction weapons in Iraq," as they used to allege to justify their war against this country.

The Syrian denial comes in erply to the allegations made by the chief of the American team for searching for weapons in Iraq, David Kay, in an interview issued yesterday by the British daily "Sunday Telegraph" to that part of the secret Iraqi weapons were transported from Iraq to Syria before the war.

Kay said " we do not hear talk about large amounts of weapons, but we do know following interrogation of former Iraq officials that a large amount of equipment were transported to Syrian before the war, including components for programs of mass destruction weapons." Kay left his post last Friday and was replaced by Charles Doulfer. The American inspection team chaired by Kay failed to find any of the mass destruction weapons which were used as a basic pretext by Washington to justify its war against Iraq. Washington has been making great pressures on Syria since the beginning of that war.
