American delegation in Libya in preparations to resume relations
Libya-USA, Politics, 1/26/2004

Seven members of the US Congress affiliate to the Democratic and Republican parties arrived in Tripoli yesterday in a first visit to be held by an American Congressmen delegation to Libya in more than 30 years.

The American Congressmen, including the democratic member in the Congress Tom Lantos, who arrived in Tripoli on Saturday, will meet with Libyan officials chaired by the ministry and the two ministries of foreign affairs and the economy, and the delegation will visit the Libyan universities. It is not known whether the delegation will be meeting with Libyan leader or not.

Upon his arrival, Lantos expressed his hope to have a greater rapprochement between the US and Libya that prepares for the restoration of relations between the two countries which were severed in 1981. He stressed that Washington is working with Tripoli in order to guarantee the development and improvement of bilateral relations.

The visit of the Congress delegation comes after a short time from Libya's consent of halting the programs of developing mass destruction weapons, and paying a sum of 2.7 billion dollars as compensations for the families of the victims of the American plane which went off over Lockerbie in Scotland in December 1988.

On the other hand, American officials said that instruments relating to the Libyan nuclear program will be transported to the US during the few coming days. Documents and drawings about the Libyan programs had arrived in Washington.

The officials added that the nuclear components will be sent to the energy and scientific labs affiliates to the US department of energy.
