Forum voices support to Geneva (peace) initiative
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 1/21/2004
Participants in a forum held at the Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO), on Monday voiced their support to the so-called Geneva Initiative on peace in the Middle east.
A declaration read out at the end of this forum by Andre Azoulay, adviser to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, insisted that the Geneva Initiative "proves that a solution, although painful but equitable, exists both for Palestinians and Israelis.."
The King's adviser who attended a meeting between the Israeli and Palestinian delegations led respectively by Yossi Beilin and Yasser Abed Rabbo, architects of the Geneva Initiative, recalled the role played by Morocco in the evolution of the peace process in the Middle East and the kingdom's contribution to various initiatives to "provide the Palestinian people with the most complete, the most legitimate and the most acceptable response compared to the situation prevailing in the region."
Participants in this forum themed "The Choc of civilization will not happen," pledged to carry on the fight against those advocating a theological and political confrontation in the world. They also insisted on dialogue between the different civilizations and culture.
Beilin and Abed Rabbo took the opportunity of this forum to launch an appeal to the International Community to support "more actively" their peace initiative which, according to them, is already backed by 40% of the Israeli and Palestainian public opinions.
