Syrian opposition holds its second conference in Brussels
Syria-Belgium, Politics, 1/19/2004

The US- backed Syrian opposition continued work of the second conference, of what is called the "democratic national coalition," including certain Kurdish parties and some independents.

In its first and second meeting, the conference discussed means of "toppling the ruling regime in Syria, and the question of human rights, and the freedom of expression and democracy, as well as the question of political detainees in the Syrian prisons."

Several opposition members expressed in a statement their desire to come to Syria, with members of the US congress, in order to "protect themselves from the Syrian authorities." They expressed their hope to expand the base of opposition internally and externally, and to get a European support for it.

Meantime, Syrian analysts and writer, Ali Oqla Orsan, said that there is no future for the Syrian opposition ideas, gathered in Brussels.

In a statement, he ruled out that the European states will be collaborating with this opposition. He said that Washington used these opposition members political propaganda so as to launch a test balloon, and that the European stand has more reason, and refuses to deal with those opposition members."

He doubted the ability of those opposition to enter the country at the protection of US congressmen, warning simultaneously the Americans that if they decide to enter Syria with the opposition abroad, they "would thereby abrogate any possibility for a dialogue."
