Saudi Arabia opposition members meet in London next week

Saudi Arabia opposition figures abroad will hold a press conference in the British capital, London, by the end of next week for one day under the title " the future of democracy in Saudi Arabia."

The conference which is the second of its sort is organized by the National Alliance for Democracy in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Center for Human Rights, and the Saudi Institute in Washington which is run by Ali Al Ahmad.

According to its supervisors, the conference concentrates on means of disseminating democracy, and the role of the international community supporting its march, and human rights in the kingdom. This, however, includes social, political and religious aspects, regional issues and human rights.

The conference will also discuss the position of the Saudi government regarding direct national elections, democratic reforms and human rights, and the role of the civil society establishments and Islamic groups in democratic reforms.

The conference will be attended by several Saudi activists and intellectuals in the field of defending democracy and human rights, as well as foreign experts. Among the participants are Madawi al-Rasheed, the humanities science at Kings- College, London; Ali Elyami the researcher at the Saudi Institute for Supporting Democracy in Washington; Hamza al-Hassan from the National Coalition for Democracy; the chief editor of the Arab Affairs magazine, London, Abdul Aziz al-Khamis the chairman of the Saudi Center for Human Rights, London.

In January 2003, the Saudi Institute in Washington organized the first conference on the future of democracy in Saudi Arabia at the Lords council ( upper House ) in London.
