King Mohammed in Egypt Today

Morocco's King Mohammed VI will head to Egypt today to cochair with Egyptian president Housni Mubarak the 5th session of the high joint commission.

The two heads of state are due to sign a package of cooperation agreements and discuss Arab, regional and international issues of common interest.

Preparatory meetings of the high joint commission that ended Saturday reflected "convergent viewpoints regarding current issues," said Egyptian deputy foreign minister in charge of Arab affairs and the Middle East, Mahmoud Moubarak. He noted that bilateral cooperation, the Palestinian question and the situation in Iraq were among the chief subjects raised in the preparatory meetings.

The Egyptian official highlighted the importance of the agreements to be signed during the commission's meeting, adding that a trade commission will meet in the future to probe means to develop the volume of bilateral exchanges and to energize cooperation between the two states' businessmen and trade chambers.

In the same connection, an important delegation of Moroccan businessmen is expected Monday in Cairo to explore investment opportunities with Egyptian peers. It comprises 50 representatives of various sectors, notably industry, information technologies, fisheries and tourism.

The Moroccan-Egyptian trade chamber underlined that the high joint commission's meeting will give a new impetus to bilateral cooperation, urging for the signing of the agreement on the creation of a free trade area dubbed the "Agadir Declaration." The Declaration was initialed in May 2001 in Agadir (southern Atlantic city) by four Arab Mediterranean states, namely Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Jordan.

The Chamber also called for speeding up the creation of a Moroccan-Egyptian bank to support trade cooperation between states signatory of the "Agadir Declaration" and north African countries.

Moroccan foreign minister, Mohammed Benaissa, said over the weekend the "Agadir Declaration" will be signed next February in Morocco.
