Algeria, Politics, 1/13/2004
A source at one of the candidates for the presidential elections in Algeria, to be held in April, said that the candidates for the elections who intend to be nominated, and have been meeting since Sunday, are preparing a memorandum on fraud in the elections.
The source explained that these figures might agree on practical initiatives that guarantee fair coming presidential elections.
The secretary general of the National Liberation Front, Ali Benflis, and the retired, lt. Gen. Rasheed Bin Yels, and the chairman of the coalition for culture and democracy, Saeed Saadi, the former foreign minister and founder of the Islamic al-Qafaa party, Ahmad Taleb al-Ibrahimi, and former prime ministers, Maoloud Hamroush and Miqdad Seifi and Ahmad Bin Beitour, chairman of human rights defense Abdul Nour Ali Yahya, met in order to issue a statement to this effect. Benflis and Bin Yels announced their nomination for the elections while the others have not yet.
The participants in the meeting were unanimous in demanding the resignation of the current prime minister Ahmad O Yahya and appointing a "non aligned " government that would be the only non-biased party assigned to organize these elections.
