30,000 Jordanian women oppose banning veil in France
Regional-France, Politics, 1/13/2004

Some 30,000 Jordanian women addressed a message to the French President, Jacque Chirac, expected to be handed over to the French embassy in Amman, in protest of Paris's decision to ban wearing the veil in educational establishments and schools, as part of a ban on all religious symbols in schools.

The memorandum called on the French President to give up implementing the veil banning decision, stressing that this decision might negatively effect France's relations with the Islamic world.

The message indicated that the veil is a religious duty on the Muslim girl and woman, and does not constitute a danger on the French society, considering that the decision of banning it is in contradiction with personal and religious freedoms and educational pluralism, and will lead to divisions inside France.

The Jordanian women commission which signed the signing ceremony on the memorandum, including the Jordanian woman union, and the women sector in the Islamic work front party, said that they intend to organize a peaceful sit in on January 17th in front of the French embassy in Amman.

Several days ago, the Jordanian agronomists association organized a women sit in in protest of banning veils in the French schools.
