Khartoum expects a nearby peace agreement
Sudan, Politics, 1/12/2004
The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir announced that a comprehensive peace agreement with the southern rebels will be signed "shortly," while Khartoum said that the agreement with the southern rebels will not be the typical example for implementation an agreement for the Darfour area.
As he was opening the 8th conference of the African Trade Unions unity organization, aBashir said that the signing will be very soon on a pan agreement with the southern rebels (SLPA). This conference, however, is attended by representatives for 50 countries in addition to representatives from France, China and Cuba.
Last Wednesday, the Sudanese government signed with the southern rebellions in Kenya an agreement on oil wealth sharing. An agreement which was considered a basic phase towards reaching a comprehensive agreement. However, negotiations are still ongoing between the two sides to reach an agreement on authority sharing, and on control of the three areas under disputes in the center of the country. N.
