Algerian peace society movement supports Butaflika's nomination
Algeria, Politics, 1/10/2004
News reports in Algiers said that the Algerian peace society movement is about to announce its support for the nomination of the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika for a second term of office.
A source at the movement's leadership was quoted as saying that "the option of alliances and commitment to the interests of the party have become predominant in the Shoura council," and it is to discuss the issue of the Presidential elections.
The deputy chairman of the movement, Fateh Qarid, said that consultations are being made at the level of local councils, to define the position of the peace society concerning the issue of the elections. He stressed that the option of all is to abide by achieving the sublime interests of the party.
Observers consider that Butaflika had paved the way for the movement's alliance with him, when he appointed four of its leading figures in the nation's council. All of them are members in the national Shoura council and the party's executive office.
Moreover, other four members were elected in an alliance between the party and the opposition members of Ali Benflis in the National Liberation Front. Thereby, the movement of the peace society for the first time has a parliamentary group in the National Council. A situation which would not be possible without alliance with the president of the republic.
