Darfour rebels confirm the killing of their military leader
Sudan, Politics, 1/9/2004

An official in the Sudan's liberation movement, which is active in Darfour, to the west of Sudan, stressed yesterday that the movement's military leader, Abdullah Abkar, died because of his wounds.

This came after the movement announced on Wednesday that Abkar was wounded in an ambush, implanted by the government's forces this week.

The Sudanese authorities had stressed the killing of Abkar earlier in the day. The governor of Darfour north province said that the commander of the military wing of the rebels of the Sudan's liberation front was killed in the battle with the government forces.

The Sudanese news agency said that Abkar and large number of the rebells were killed in the battle which took place in Abu Qamra area in Darfour north province. The agency added that the army which imposed its control on the region, destroyed 6 vehicles for the rebels, and seized other 6 vehicles.

Conflict has been increasing in Darfour, despite progress towards ending the civil war which has been continuous since 20 years between the Sudanese government and the southern rebels, led by John Garang. On Wednesday the two sides signed an agreement on oil wealth sharing.

Darfour rebels considered the document as a bilateral agreement between the government and the southern rebels, and does not put an end to their problems. In a statement, the chairman of the movement said that the country will continue to be in a state of war as long as Sudan's problems are ignored, calling on the international community to work for putting an end to what he called the sufferings of the people of Darfour.
