Khaddam meets with Iraqi tribe delegation

Syria's Vice-President Abdul Halim Khaddam on Wednesday met a delegation of the Iraqi tribe of al-Jabbour headed by Said Saud al-Humeidan.
He reviewed with the delegation the latest developments of the situation in Iraq and the region in general as well as the history of bilateral relations between Syria and Iraq. He stressed Syria's keen to maintain those ties, and the support to the Iraqi people, so that they face difficult and "harsh conditions as a result of occupation."
Khaddam underlined the significance of national unity in all walks of life in Iraq to overcome existing predicaments, and build a united, independent Iraq, able to continue its role on the Arab and international arena.
He was briefed by the head and members of the delegation on detail of everyday life under the occupation, and their future vision to build their independent state, through a constitution that guarantee the election of their representatives. The head and members of the delegation thanked Syria for its firm Pan-Arab stances, and President Bashar al-Assad's keenness to preserve Iraq's unity, and his continued call in international meetings for the rebuilding of an independent Iraq.
Khaddam told reporters after the meeting that "Iraqi brothers talk with one logic and directionsÉthis is an indicator to the depth of their national feelings." He added he was "briefed on the suffering of Iraqi brothers in all fields, and their work so that Iraq would regain its independence and sovereignty, and work with their other brothers to hold a national conference to enable them restore independence, and hold free election under the UN supervision to write a constitution that leads to a legitimate government."
Khaddam stressed that the national unity is the basis for the success for the Iraqis to achieve their aspirations, pointing out that the most dangerous thing for Iraq is the goal of some foreign powers, particularly Israel, to undermine the national unity which constitutes the passage for the realization of Iraqi aspirations.
Answering a question on talk about setting up self-rule autonomy in the north of Iraq, the Vice-President indicated that this issue is up to the Iraqis to discuss, as they are the party who would decide the destiny of their country through free elections under an international supervision.
