Moussa calls the Arab states to get behind efforts to rebuild Iraq
Iraq-Regional, Economics, 1/7/2004
Amr Moussa, secretary-general of the Arab League, has called on the Arab states to get behind efforts to rebuild Iraq, following talks with a member of the Iraqi interim Governing Council in Cairo.
Speaking at the opening of the 20th session of the Arab Council of Ministers, Moussa urged "attending ministers, Arab companies, state and private, to join in force in the international competition for Iraq's reconstruction.
"The door is open to Arab companies to enter the Iraqi market," said Moussa, adding that "there is no reason to fear the competition of conglomerates, because they could not drive the reconstruction alone."
Governing Council member Iyad Allawi earlier called for the Arab League to play a key role in rebuilding Iraq.
Allawi told reporters after a meeting with Moussa that he had asked "the secretary-general for backing so that the new Iraq may resume its rightful place in the Arab states.
"We discussed the role of Arab nations in the reconstruction of Iraq, and of intensifying Arab efforts in the rebuilding process," Allawi said.
