Khartoum deters attack rebells in Darfour;: Sudanese postpone wealth- share agreement
Sudan, Politics, 1/6/2004
The signing of the agreement on the wealth- share file, in the framework of the Sudanese peace talks held in Nivasha resort in Kenya, was postponed.
Well-informed Sudanese sources attributed this postponement to what it called the backtracking of the delegation of the southern rebels from what they had agreed to during the past days talks.
The source said that the rebels used to place obstacles in the last moments, each and every time the two sides approached an agreement on wealth sharing.
The Sudanese government and the southern rebels resumed peace negotiations in Nivasha on Friday, following a one-day suspension on the occasion of the new year, and Sudan's national day ( independence.)
In another development for the Sudanese situation, Khartoum denied the allegations of the rebels in Darfour west province, on confiscating a town in the region, and stressed that its forces deterred the attack launched by the rebels against the town.
The spokesman for the government of southern Darfour, Jad Eddine Jawdat Allah, said that the rebels killed 6 members of the security forces, during an attack against Sharya town, to the north east of the province, on Saturday, noting that the security situation is stable in the province after the attackers were deterred.
Earlier, the Sudan Liberation Army alleged it had took control of Sharya town, 70 Km to the east of Neyal, capital of southern Darfour province in a battle that lasted for two hours in which 200 government soldiers were killed.
The Sudan Liberation Movement and a smaller group in Darfour in February, rose against the government 2003 in protest of what they described the government's negligence of this almost desert area.
