Kuwait identifies the remains of 61 of its prisoners in Iraq
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 1/5/2004
Kuwaiti government sources said that the identity of 61 Kuwaiti prisoners was defined, whose remains were found in mass graves in Iraq, after they were detained during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990.
The Kuwaiti news agency quoted Fayez al-Anzi, the chairman of the committee in charge of investigating the fate of missing, saying that 8 new bodies were identified after DNA tests on their remains, which were found in mass graves in Iraq, following the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in April 2003.
Kuwait says that thousands of Kuwaitis and other nationalities were jailed, when the Iraqi forces jailed Kuwait in August 1990 and occupied it for 7 months. However, the fate of 605 of them following the liberation of Kuwait in 1991 is not known.
The Kuwaiti authorities said that in addition to the Kuwaitis there are also 14 Saudis, five Egyptians and five Iranians, four Syrians, three Lebanese, one Bahraini, one Omani and one Indian.
Saddam Hussein's regime admitted repeatedly it had arrested several Kuwaitis, but stressed that it had lost track of them following the Gulf war in 1991.
