Syria, Economics, 1/2/2004

The ministry of industry with the collaboration of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization ( UNIDO), and the support of the United Nations Development program (UNDP) will hold a national workshop under the title of " Pillars of Syrian Industrial Development Strategy "on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th, January, 2004 at the Damascus al-Sham palace."

During the two day workshop speeches will be made by representatives of UNIDO, Taoufik Ben Amara, resident representative of UNDP and the minister of industry Safi Abu Dan, on behalf of the prime minister.

The workshop. However, will be held within the framework of the project "support to the implementation of the integrated program: industrial development strategy and national program for restructuring and upgrading." The project started in August 2002, with an estimated budget of 412,950 dollars jointly funded by the Syrian government and the UNDP.

This project, moreover, forms part of the integrated program for Syria entitled " Made in Syria." Its objective is to assist the government of Syria in formulating a strategic vision and national industrial restructuring and upgrading program which will enhance the capacities of national industries to compete and innovate under the new conditions of globalization and, in particular, by improving their productivity in technological and managerial capacities, and their competitive position regionally and globally.

Therefore the main objective of holding this workshop is to advance the common goal of developing a national strategy for industrial development in Syria. The workshop concentrated on three main topics which were presented and discussed: an assessment of the industry in Syria and its development strategy; the manufacturing industry in Syria and the industrial public sector reform.

Worthy mentioning that the UNDP is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. The UNDP is also on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and its wide range partners. Tomader
