Call for pan conference for National Liberation Front in Algeria
Algeria, Politics, 1/2/2004
The "Correctionist Movement" in the National Liberation Front in Algeria said it will hold its conference for this year during the few coming weeks, after it had extended an invitation to the secretary general of the party, Ali Benflis, to convene a general conference for the party, in order to eliminate the current crisis following the decision by the government to freeze activities of the party.
The coordinator of the movement, Ali Balkhadem, said that his movement does not oppose Benflis to join the "Correctionist Movement" conference which will work to revitalize the party. He set a condition that this is to be made through democratic ways, and electing of representatives by the republican's grass-roots, in a way guarantees participation for everyone without exception.
Balkhadem stressed that the sentence of the judiciary did not freeze the party, rather froze its commissions that emerged from the illegal 8th conference, because of what he described as violation of the law by the secretary general.
He loomed on the need of making a distinction between the presidential elections and the aim of his movement represented in correcting the path of the party. He added that the conference is the side which decides the nomination, and that Benflis' wing can defend its position before the representatives.
On Tuesday, the Algerian judiciary froze all activities of the National Liberation Front ( former ruling party), which at the meantime enjoys the majority at the people's national council ( the parliament).
This decision was taken after a case filed by activists in the party against its secretary general Ali Benflis, in which they opposed the decisions taken in the 8th conference which was held in March 2003 in Algeria, during which Benflis was elected as a secretary general for the party.
