Kuwaiti parliamentarians warn government against changing the curricula
Kuwait, Politics, 12/31/2003
Kuwaiti parliamentarians have warned the government against being subjected to the American and western "blackmailing" to change schools curricula, with the aims of removing subjects believed to be encouraging extremism and terrorism.
Islamic parliamentarians in particular warned against changing the Islamic principles in the school books, stressing that Kuwait's school curricula do not " encourage extremism nor generate terrorists."
The Islamic parliamentarian, Abdullah Akkash, said "we warn all officials not to violate anything pertaining to curricula, especially the Islamic education." He continued questioning "is there a new religion you want to teach the students. Is it the western religion, or the new American religion?"
The warning came during a session for the Kuwaiti Ummah council ( the parliament), to discuss the government's educational policy, overwhelmed by reports which indicated that the government changed several curricula. At the beginning of a discussion on education on Monday, the education ministry secretary, Hammoud al-Sadoun said that the government is currently composing school books in Islamic, Arabic language, social studies and national education subjects, in a way to enhance values of tolerance, and to fight violence and extremism.
