King of Bahrain visits Doha to strengthen relations

King of Bahrain, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, arrived yesterday in Doha in an official visit to Qatar.

Upon his arrival, he held talks with the Amir of Qatar, Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani that dealt with several issues including means of enhancing relations between the two states, the current situation in Iraq, and the developments of conditions in the Palestinian territories.

Talks, according to sources close to the Qatari- Bahraini summit in Manama, dealt with results of the recent Gulf Cooperation Council GCC summit held recently in Kuwait.

The two leaders agreed that the joint higher committee between the two states will hold its meeting in Manama in the second half of February 2004.

The King of Bahrain said that "the summit will discuss technical issues including the bridge," which will links the two states. He said that it is "a huge project." He described the talks with the Amir of Qatar as "a support for the GCC," adding that "we have opened new page among us."

Relations between Manama and Doha witnessed coolness since the mid of 2002, following the suspension of the meeting of the joint committee between the two states, headed by the crown princes in the two neighborly states, The said committee was due to hold a meeting in Manama in the mid of April this year.

The two states formed a joint higher committee following the end of their border dispute in 2001. They discussed several joint projects, especially a bridge linking them similar to that one linking Bahrain to Saudi Arabia.
