Iraqi intellectuals, writers delegation meet al-Assad

President Bashar al-Assad received an Iraqi delegation of intellectuals, writers, men of letters, poets and journalists at the People's Palace Sunday morning.
Talks during the meeting dealt with the steps being taken by Syria regionally and internationally to support the people of Iraq.
Also, Syria's Vice-President Abdul Halim Khaddam received the Iraqi delegation headed by Mansour al-Hadithi. Khaddam expressed hope that these meetings will enhance open dialogue and exchange points of views on the Iraqi plight asserting the important role of the intellectuals in facing the imminent threats as well as the foundation of an Arab culture that meets the needs of the Arab states.
Khaddam renewed Syria's adherence to the Pan-Arab firm principles and support to the Iraqi people, stressing the importance of enhancing the Iraqi national unity.

In response to a question on the Syrian initiative on the weapons of mass destruction, Khaddam said: This initiative is presented to the UN Security Council earlier to the recent Libyan initiative and Syria and the Arab countries will follow-up on it inside and outside the UN Security Council.
Regarding the peace process in the region, Khaddam said "Syria's policy is very clear and Syria wants peace and the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions."
