Al-Jazeera correspondent in Sudan released
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 12/26/2003
The Sudanese authorities announced yesterday the release of Islam Saleh, the director of al-Jazeera office in Khartoum, under personal guarantee, after he was detained for one week over being accuses of broadcasting programs that the government said "include misleading information, biased analysis and distorting the image of the country."
The national security department detained Saleh and brought him before the court on Wednesday, which by its turn released him under personal guarantee.
A police and security force broke into al-Jazeera office in Khartoum and confiscated three cameras and the live broadcasting equipment.
In a statement, Amnesty International, which has London as a headquarters, denounced the detention of Islam Saleh, expressing concern over the conditions of his detention and treatment by the Sudanese security department.
Moreover, the Arab human rights committee demanded for immediate release of Saleh, and issued a statement describing the decision of closing al-Jazeera office in Khartoum as an oppressive measure. The statement also called for halting repulsive measures against the press as well as al-Jazeera TV.
