Jordan lawyers urged AL to demand handing over Saddam to a neutral state
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 12/24/2003

The Jordanian Bar Assosciation has urged the Arab League AL to demand handing over the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to a neutral state or to the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, and not to try him, and to permit his relatives to visit him in his prison.

In a message addressed to the secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, the association called for "working to use all means of international law, in order to ensure security guarantees for the legitimate President of Iraq." The trade union considered that the guarantees that should be provided for Saddam needs that "he has to be handed over to a neutral state or the ICRC, and not to try him, because the head of state represents the sovereignty of the country, and remains immune from criminal questioning, according to the Iraqi constitution and international law."

The association also urged Moussa to work for enabling a delegation from the Arab Bar association to visit Sadam Hussein to ensure legal protection for him, as well as enabling his daughter Raghad, who lives in Jordan to visit her father.

Meantime, the former chairman of the Jordanian bar association, Saleh al-Armouti, said he had received a telephone call from the French lawyer Emaneul LeDeau, asking him for help in an attempt with the American authorities to permit them visiting Saddam in his prison. Al-Armouti added that the "French lawyer informed me he is seeking to form a defendant commission, and is making contacts with the American side to get a permission for meeting with the Iraqi President, and he asked me to cooperate with him in this regard."
