Saud al-Faisal on peace in the Middle East
Saudi Arabia-Regional, Politics, 12/24/2003
Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal described Israel's latest unilateral moves to isolate Palestinians and impose its own one-sided solutions as undermining peace efforts in the Middle East.
Al-Faisal told reporters in a news conference Tuesday that the kingdom welcomes Iran's signing of the additional protocol on the non-proliferation, branding the measure as conforming to the general trend of the Middle East countries to turn the region into a zone free of weapons of mass destruction.
The Saudi Prince added he hoped the Iranian positive gesture could urge the global community to pressure Israel into abandon its atomic programs, and allow international inspection of its nuclear facilities to establish security and stability in the region. He also welcomed Libya's declaration on relinquishing equipment of weapons of mass destruction programs, noting that the Libya's move discloses Israel's attitude over the issue, and will get the international community to recognize necessity of freeing the region from such weapons.
On Iraq, the Saudi Foreign Minister said there is need to transfer powers in the country in the way Iraqis deem suitable.
