Bahrain denies knowing about threats to American interests
Bahrain-USA, Politics, 12/24/2003
Bahrain's information minister Nabil Yaqoub al-Homor said that Bahrain does not know about threats of possible attacks occurring in the country. This, however, followed an American warning of attacks against the American embassy in Manama.
Al-Homor expressed conviction that the situation is satisfactory, and there is no evidence that the situation is dangerous. He said that available information about this threat is not confirmed, noting that the Americans were notified about that via a foreign embassy in Bahrain.
The American embassy in Manama said that the threats covered American citizens in Bahrain especially during the Christmas and new year celebrations. A statement by the embassy explained that it sees: increasing indicators for an attack prepared by al-Qaida organization against the American interests abroad. Some 5,000 Americans, most of them are military men working in the Fifth American fleet, which takes Bahrain as a headquarters for its leadership. Bahrain, however, witnessed acts of protests against the US during the period prior to the invasion of Iraq but no attacks were launched against westerners in Bahrain.
