Sudanese authorities close al-Jazeera office in Khartoum
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 12/19/2003

The Sudanese authorities decided to close al-Jazeera office in Khartoum giving no justification for this decision. The Sudanese security forces also detained the director of the office Islam Saleh.

The Sudanese security forces broke into the office on Wednesday evening, and confiscated three cameras and the office's special live transmission equipment.

Just recently, al-Jazeera office in Khartoum received several threats from the Sudanese security, due to what was stated, that certain political sides are unhappy with al-Jazeera's coverage of events in Sudan. Worthy mentioning that Saleh was earlier exposed to an attack while covering a political activity.

On the other hand, the director of al-Jazeera office in Khartoum said a little time before he was detained, quoting sources in the opposition People's Congress party that the security authorities confiscated the general headquarters of the party in Khartoum.

This measure comes following accusations raised by the government to the party, which is led by Hassan al-Turabi, of supporting the rebels in Darfour. It also comes after the announcement made by the party that the security authorities arrested four of his leading members two days earlier.
