Rifaat al-Saeed chairman of the Egyptian coalition party
Egypt, Politics, 12/18/2003
The general conference of the Egyptian Unionist Progressive National Coalition party yesterday announced that its secretary general, Rifaat al-Saeed, won the post of the chairman of the party in succession to Khaled Mohey Eddine.
Al-Saeed, 71 year old, was the only candidate for the post after the nomination door closed two weeks ago. An emergency general conference for the part was held in December, 2002 that decided to abide by a list, stated to limit leading figures in their posts for two sessions, and therefore it has become banned for Mohey Eddine ( 80 year old) to nominate himself once again for this post.
But with al-Saeed winning the presidency of the party, it was decided to have Mohey Eddine, a member in the council of the former revolution leadership as an honorary chairman for the party.
The number of the general conference of the coalition party is 800 who elect a central committee including 40 members that elects the secretary general and other leading posts. The conference will continue meetings for two days.
