Sweden-based NGO calls for solidarity with Polisario victims
Morocco-Sweden, Politics, 12/17/2003
The Sweden-based association of defense of the sequestered of Tindouf (ADESETI) called Tuesday for solidarity with the victims of injustice and human rights violations perpetrated by the Polisario separatists in the camps of Tindouf (south-western Algeria).
The call was made in a detailed 47-page memorandum sent to the Francophone Belgium and Brussels section of Amnesty International (AI).
Spokesman for the ADESETI, Alamin Yahya, relates the sufferings of the victims who have been deprived of basic rights and dignity during so many years.
The organization cites the case of Khalihenna Sejab, jailed from 1978 to 1992 for having denounced, for the first time, embezzlement of the humanitarian aid by the Polisario separatists.
Mahjoub Salek, alias Zafaf, was tortured for having criticized the methods of the Algeria-backed separatists.
The association says 235 identified victim of Polisario atrocities on Algerian soil, calling international humanitarian associations, including the Red Cross, to see to speed up the release of all detainees in the region.
ADESETI, whose members are mostly Swedish nationals, also brings forward concrete examples of persons who still bear scars of the torture they have sustained and hands out lists of people who suffer mental disorders and others who died under torture.
