Mubarak blames Iraqi intransigence for current conditions
Egypt-Iraq, Politics, 12/16/2003
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak said in an exclusive statements to Ibrahim Nafie, the editor of AL Ahram in a comment on the capture of the ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein he hopes that this step would provide a good chance for transferring the authority to the Iraqi people. He said he hopes that such a transfer would take place according to a timetable so that Iraqis may govern themselves.
The President said we are prepared to help as much as we can in easing down the sufferings of the Iraqis.
"We also hope that this development would serve as a good. start for healing the Arab and Islamic wounds and would put a genuine end to the Iraq-Iran war on one side and to the aftershocks of the Iraqi invasion of the sisterly Kuwait on the other," the President said.
"I believe that all would recall the role played by me personally and by Egypt for a long time in order to spare the Iraqi people this sorrowful end, starting with cautions I have made against the consequences of occupying neighborly Kuwait and that the results would be dangerous for the Iraqi people and our Arab nation," the President said.
The President said that role continues as far as the issue of the weapons of mass destruction is concerned adding he asserted to the Iraqi officials many times that they should allow international organizations to make inspections so long as there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
The President said in spite of these appeals, Saddam Hussein paid no attention to our advice and as a result we are witnessing the results of intransigence on the Iraqi people and on Saddam himself.
