Kuwait provides Iraq with one million liters of benzene daily
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 12/12/2003
Kuwaiti energy ministry secretary Issa al-Aoun announced yesterday that Kuwait approved to provide Iraq, who has the second largest oil reserve in the world, with additional amounts of Benzene to help it in withstanding a great fuel shortage.
The Kuwaiti official said, following a meeting with an Iraqi delegation, that the " Iraqi side asked to be provided with one million liters of Benzene daily, and we told them that Kuwait is ready to produce this amount," noting that the two countries discussed shipping this amount of Benzene via land or sea or through a pipeline installed during the American war against Iraq to provide the coalition forces with Benzene, noting that " Kuwait is currently providing Iraq and the American and British coalition forces with two million liters of Benzene daily, and that it was applied to increase this amount to 3.5 million liters daily."
The two sides also agreed to "revive the project of exporting the Iraqi gas to Kuwait. A project which stopped since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Meantime, the Kuwaiti prime minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah ruled out in a statement quoted by the Saudi daily Okaz that the next Gulf summit will discuss "the issue of Iraq's joining the GCC membership." He said that this matter will be debated when Iraq asks for it.
