Syria, EU transport co-operation highlighted

Syria's Transport Minister, Makram Obied on Wednesday discussed with Ralf Cultier, Director General of the Mediterranean-European Transport Project, the existing cooperation between the European Commission and Syria, particularly in the filed of developing and improving the transport sector in the country.
Obied said his ministry has always been seeking help from local and foreign experts, and studies to develop the vital sector of transport, in line with the current and future plans as part of a wider program to rehabilitate railways, land and sea transport.
For his part, Caltair said the Commission is willing to help further develop and restructure the sector of transport with the neighboring countries, through a process of gathering data until 2004, as a prelude to outlining an overall advanced transport study that would includes Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan.
The European official expressed his delegation's readiness to cooperate and take into consideration ideas and opinions that help improve transport in Syria.
The European delegation had already arrived in Damascus Tuesday on a three-day visit for talks with senior officials in transport.
