Spain backs special relationship between Morocco and EU

Spain on Tuesday voiced support to a "special relationship" between Morocco and the European Union.

Concerning the advanced status -halfway between full membership and associate status- that Morocco is seeking to establish with Europe, Spain reiterates strong support to a special relation between Morocco and the European Union, reads the joint declaration issued following the 6th meeting of the Moroccan-Spanish high joint commission, held in Marrakesh December 8-9.

France had also expressed its support to Morocco's call for an advanced status with the Union.

President Jacques Chirac of France had told MAP news agency on the eve of state visit to Morocco last October that such a status will "confirm Morocco's privileged relations with Europe."
