Calls on Libya to disclose fate of al-Kekhya, on tenth anniversary of disappearance
Libya, Politics, 12/10/2003
Several international organization and Libyan human rights groups abroad urged the Libyan government and the world, to disclose the fate of the Libyan foreign minister and its representative at the UN Mansour al-Kekhya, on the 10th anniversary of his disappearance.
Amnesty International asked the Libyan authorities on the need to end 10 years of silence on the issue, and to find out the fate of al-Kekhya, and to put an end to the sufferings of his wife and children.
In a statement, the organization said that al-Kekhya was seen for the last time on December 10th, 1993 in Cairo, where he was attending a general conference for the Arab human rights organization.
Despite the repeated attempts by his family and human rights organizations to get explanations on his location, his family still awaits receiving any news about him.
The organization quoted Bahaa al-Omari, al-Keykha wife, as saying "I have, as a woman and wife, to suffer all these years not knowing the place where my husband is, or whether he is alive. I, myself and my children, want nothing except to know the truth."
Despite the fact that the Libyan authorities showed during the recent years certain indicators on its readiness to deal with the human rights situation in the country, however, vagueness still prevails the al-Kekhya case. The Libyan authorities gave no serious indications conducive to disclosing the fate of this man.
The organization said that al-Kekhya family received throughout the years several allegations, and some times contradictory. One of the continued rumors indicated the possibility that Egypt had handed him over to Libya, where he is probably under detention.
The organization also called on the Libyan authorities to the need of taking decisive measures to explain the fate of the two Libyan citizens "who disappeared inside or outside the country, including jballah Matar and Youssef al-Mqeirif, who are among the prominent opposition activists" that disappeared in Cairo in march 1990.
The Libyan league for human rights, which al-Keykhya is considered a founding member of, will organize a seminar and a press conference in London on Thursday. The Libyan authorities has continuously denied any links to his disappearance.
