Egyptian, Sudanese, Ethiopian FMs keen to achieve peace, cooperation
Egypt-Ethiopia, Politics, 12/8/2003
At the joint press conference following the extensive meeting of the Egyptian, Sudanese and Ethiopian Foreign Ministers, Maher asserted that the relations among the three countries are deep-rooted, noting that they were very keen on achieving peace, progress and cooperation.
The three meeting was" fruitful and beneficial," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said following his meeting with Sudanese and Ethiopian counterparts Moustafa Ismail Taha and Seyoum Mesfin.
The three ministers exchanged views on boosting ties between their countries and wracking together in harmony to settle problems facing the Horn of Africa and achieve development for all countries of the region.
Maher said that they agreed to hold such a meeting on a biannual basis at the most in one of the capitals of the three countries.
Maher welcomed Mesfin's invitation to hold the next meeting in Addis Ababa after six months.
This does not mean that the three ministers will not meet before that time.
They can meet at any time, Maher said.
The tripartite meetings which started in Cairo, the Egyptian foreign minister said, aim at serving the good of the peoples of the region.
Cooperation will cover all fields, including trade, economic, cultural and joint security domains, he added.
Experts from the three countries will meet in their three capitals to discuss all aspects of cooperation, Maher said.
Maher, at the joint press conference with his Ethiopian counterpart, said Egyptian-Ethiopian relations in the water domains are excellent.
Answering a question on Egyptian apprehensions regarding tampering with the Nile water quotas and the presence of Israel in the Upper Nile areas, something that would affect Egypt's national security, Maher said that the irrigation ministers in Egypt and Ethiopia are cooperating with other Nile Basin countries' ministers on this score.
Responding to a question on whether there was Egyptian- Ethiopian cooperation in implementing a peace agreement in Sudan, Maher said that this issue was not addressed during his talks with his Ethiopian counterpart.
He indicated, however, that Sudanese peace would be a topic of discussion at a tripartite meeting grouping the three countries' foreign ministers in Cairo on Sunday.
Today's talks tackled the situation in the Horn of Africa countries, added Maher.
