Sudan, Politics, 12/5/2003
The Sudanese government and the opposition Democratic National Coalition signed a peace agreement in Jeddah in the framework of the political solution for the Sudanese political crisis.
The agreement was signed by SudanŐs (First) Vice-President, Ali Othman Muhammad Taha, and the chairman of the opposition national coalition Muhammad Othman al-Meirghani who has been opposing al-Bashir's government and worked to topple it since more than 10 years.
The agreement states the peaceful transfer of authority, and giving up all forms of violence in political action. He called for the adoption of democracy as a system for the regime and resorting to the presidential Republican system for the rule in the country, allowing freedom of political action to all political parties and forces, so as to guarantee rights of everyone to be elected to any official position through free competition.
The agreement also states the right of each of the Sudanese states to elect its governnor and legislative council, the independency of the national committee for the elections, abiding by lifting restriction imposed on oppositions. It also called for ensuring the nationality of the armed forces, and the security system in a way that would not liquidate them.
To implement these items, the agreement states the need to form a national government of a wide base. It also stresses honoring and supporting what was stated in the framework of the Mashakos agreement between the Sudanese government and the southern rebels, led by John Garang.
Taha signed this agreement, hours before his meeting with Ganarg in Nivasha resort, in Kenya. The two delegations are scheduled to discuss issues that obstruct the realization of an agreement, including sharing of authority and natural resources.
