Al-Assad, da Silva intent on increased cooperation in all areas

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva held a meeting Wednesday afternoon attended by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara and the Syrian Ambassador to Brazil Shaheen Farah.
Attending the meeting from the Brazilian side were the Minister of State for Foreign Relations Silso Amorim, and the Brazilian Ambassador in Damascus, Eduardo Montiero da Baros Rocso.
At the end of the meeting and in presence of President Bashar al-Assad and his wife, several agreements were signed including an agreement of cooperation in the filed of Sport, an agreement of cooperation in the field of Culture and Education for the years 2004-2005-2006, an agreement of cooperation in the technical, health fields, and an agreement of cooperation in the filed of tourism.
Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara on Wednesday evening discussed with the Brazilian counterpart the international situation and latest developments in the region, particularly in the occupied Palestinian lands and in Iraq.
The two sides agreed on the importance of the UN role in resolving disputes in the world, and stressed necessity of implementing the UN resolutions on the Palestinian issue and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Amorim expressed his country's support to Syria's legitimate demands on the necessity of Israeli withdrawal from the Syrian Arab Golan to the 4th June Line.
For his part, al-Shara emphasized Syria's support to Brazil's forthcoming membership at the UN Security Council and the significance of its role in Latin America.
President al-Assad and President da Silva attended in Damascus on Wednesday part of the activities of the Syrian-Brazilian Businessmen Forum held at Le Meridian in Damascus. He delivered a speech where he welcomed the Brazilian President in Damascus appreciating his commitments on need to boost relations between Syria and Brazil.
Al-Assad expressed hope that convening this forum will express joint will that the ties will have direct economic dimensions in all areas.
He expressed hope that Brazilians will find a suitable environment in Syria to realize their economic activities, and a better investment opportunities through Syria as a gate to the Middle of Asia..
He added that "in spite of what have been mentioned of the large size of the investment fields, I give special attention to some areas which Syrian and Brazilian businessmen can attain the best results," such as tourism as Syria wich has a historical, cultural and natural constituents, pointing out that Brazilians could contribute in this field through their wide expertise.
President referred also to the naval transport, mineral, food and textile industries in addition to information technology.
He urged the two sides to find suitable means of consultation and coordination wishing the Brazilian President and delegation all success.
President da Silva delivered a speech where he expressed Brazil's will to strengthen and improve the ties between the two countries. He pointed out that his government is determined to put a bilateral new agenda for pushing the relations forwards on all levels.
He added that this forum offers multiple opportunities, and there are good aspirations for several sectors that reflect the level of integration of the Brazilian economy on the levels of agriculture, textiles, oil products, car industries, machines and planes.
He said that "we are going through an important step through signing a number of agreements which would encourage the establishment of a better cooperation between our institutions."
He stressed that the next step will be an establishment of a bilateral commercial committee that would extend our commercial relations with a more active dynamics.
He asserted the pivotal role Damascus international Fair plays in the region where it celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.
The former Argentine President and the currently Chief of Latin American Joint Market Countries Mercosur, Edwardo Dohaldy, who accompanies the Brazilian President, expressed in his speech the joint Market's will to open the way to the developing countries to joint it in a way that would enhance the relations between these countries and Mercosur.
