Al-Shara's letter to the UN security council: Israel mocks the UN, has no regard to international law
Syria-Israel, Politics, 12/3/2003

Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara underlined yesterday that Israel doesn't care about the UN Security Council resolutions with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict. The Security Council resolutions are 37 in number, and the United Nations' General Assembly relevant resolutions are almost 600. All these resolutions are pending Israeli carelessness towards the international law.

In his letter to Senegal's permanent delegate to the UN, Papa Luis Val, Chairman of the committee concerned with the Palestinian people's unalienable rights, al-Shara stated that the "Israeli inhuman practices come at the time the committee holds her meeting in solidarity with the Palestinian people."

He added that the suffering of the Palestinian has been ongoing for the past fifty years.

The foreign minister confirmed that Israel "has not been able to force the Palestinian people to abandon their rights despite all the sophisticated warfare it deploys against the civilian Palestinians who are still offering sacrifices in a continuous struggle to establish the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and practice their 'right of return' in according with UN resolutions Nos. 242, 883 and 194."

Al-Shara also spoke of the struggle of the Syrian citizens of Golan, which has been ongoing for more than thirty years of rejection to the Israeli occupation. He indicated that the Syrian citizens of Golan have pledged to continue their struggle "till their land is liberated and returned to Syria."

Al-Shara said that Syria asserted that "the road towards the achievement of peace lies in an end to the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories which has been ongoing since 1967." He said "This can be attained through negotiations according to the route of just and comprehensive peace by means of implementation of United Nations' resolutions and the Arab peace initiative adopted in Beirut Summit of 2003."

He wondered "how long would Israel go on playing the role of victim at the time when it occupies the Palestinian land by force, destroys the Palestinian property and kills their children."

Al-Shara also wondered "how does it come that the victims of the Israeli occupation are branded as terrorists and are allowed to be killed under the pretext of fighting terrorism by means of airforce and armored tanks against civilian Palestinian."

Al-Shara called on the Security Council and the international community to shoulder their responsibilities for the achievement of a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East region through the implementation of the international resolutions, which stipulate that Israel totally withdraw from the occupied Arab territories to the 4th of June 1967 line, and also withdraws from the occupied Lebanese territories including Shebaa Farms, in a manner that guarantees the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

He called on the committee to continue her support to the Palestinian people in their struggle till the Palestinian land is liberated and the refuges are repatriated, with the Palestinian rights restored so that a just and comprehensive peace prevails the Middle East and the world.
