America and the Muslim world do not know each other in their reality (ambassador)
Regional-USA, Politics, 11/29/2003
America and the Muslim world "do not know each other in their reality" and have a tendency to judge each other through stereotypes based on "acts and declarations of a fringe group," of their respective societies said Moroccan ambassador to the United States.
Aziz Mekouar who was speaking at a debate, Monday evening in Washington, on relations between the United States and the Arab and Islamic World, organized by the World Affairs Council, described as a "mutual wrong perception" the problem of understanding between these two worlds. This, he said, is due to the lack of an "inadequate communication" between them.
Recent polls have shown a deterioration of America's image in the eyes of the Arab and Muslim World.
Echoing him, Malaysian ambassador to Washington, Ghazzali Cheikh Abdulkhalid, blamed "the (American) television industry" which, he emphasized, projects only "negative aspects" instead of "real values" of America.
On their part, the ambassadors of Egypt, Nabil Fahmy and of Lebanon, Farid Abboud, as well as the representative of the Palestinian National Authority said that the main cause of the problem lies in the US policy in the Middle East.
