Hilary Clinton in Baghdad: internationalize the problem; mistakes are being made
Iraq-USA, Politics, 11/29/2003

After less than 24 hours from the unexpected visit by the US President George W. Bush to Baghdad, Hilary Clinton, member of the US Senate and wife of former US President Bill Clinton arrived in Iraq. She was accompanied by the democratic Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island in a visit that lasted for one day.

Mrs. Clinton called on the US administration to give the UN a greater role in Iraq in order to alleviate the cost born by the US. She met on Friday with members of the Interim Governing Council and American soldiers. She said that she believes in the need to internationalize the problem of Iraq, but admitted that this will require "a great change in the thinking of our administration and I do not think this is near."

Together with Reed, Clinton warned that the new plan approved by the occupation authorities with the Interim Council to transfer authority will be a failure because of the security situation in Iraq. Reed said that the Americans have to guarantee a "decisive element" to complete this process, which is the consent of the Shiite figure Ali al-Seistani.

Senator Reed expressed regret that US policy in Iraq is in a crisis that caused by decisions for a hasty election that will put in authority persons who do not want to share the the US is trying to promote.
