Taha accuses Turabi of violating peace talks on Darfour
Sudan, Politics, 11/24/2003

SudanŐs (First) Vice-President, Ali Othman Muhammad Taha, has accused the People's Congress Party, which is led by Hassan Turabi, of violating peace talks with the rebels of Dafour, which are being held under the mediation of Chad .

In statements quoted by the Sudanese radio, Taha threatened to desolve the party if it does not reconsider its policy and the activity of its members in Darfour.

He added that the authorities have been monitoring the situation in Darfour, and the policy of assigning roles there.

He considered that the crossing over of the rebels of Darfour to the southern rebels (SPLA), with whom the government is making negotiations in Kenya, will result in new demands already settled by the negotiations.

On the other hand, the rebels of Darfour said they had released four relief workers and one Sudanese government employee they said they had rescued from other kidnapping militias.

The Darfour rebels, Sudan's liberation movement, started an armed activity against the government in February. The two sides in the first round of negotiations signed a cease fire agreement for six weeks period enforced since September 6th which was extended in a round of negotiations on October 26th.

This agreement is the only progress attained by the two sides in settling this conflict which resulted in killing 3000 persons and displacement of thousands.
