Jubeir: we will be victorious against al-Qaida; Saudi Arabia: terrorists are like Israel
Saudi Arabia, Politics, 11/15/2003
As Saudi Arabia on Thursday denied the idea of mediation carried out by a group of Saudi clergy, the chairman of the Saudi Shoura council, and Imam of al-Haram mosque Sheikh Saleh Bin Abdullah Bin Hameed described the executors of the explosions against al-Muhayya residential complex as being like the Israelis.
Sheikh Bin Hameed said that the behavior of the executors of the explosions are like the "terrorism" practiced by Israel against the Palestinians and considered that the al-Muhayya attack aims at implanting sedition among Muslims.
In Friday's sermon which was transmitted live on air by the Saudi TV, Sheikh Bin Hameed questioned the link between the "Israeli terrorism and the terrorism of extremists. He said that such comparison is valid "between women and children who are killed in Palestine and the houses that are demolished and the children and women who were killed in al-Riyadh." Bin Hameed urged everyone including the security forces and the media to fight terrorism and extremism.
Adel al-Jubeir, the advisor of the Saudi ArabiaÕs Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz for foreign affairs, said in Washington that an al-Qaida cell ( composed of 12 to 18 persons) carried out the al-Muhayya complex attack. He noted that the attackers may have thought that they are attacking westerners, noting that al-Muhayya complex was also inhabited for American and European employees working for the US Boeing corporation.
Al-Jubeir stressed that Osama Bin Laden's network "will not succeed in attacking the state of Saudi Arabia." He added "we have started a comprehensive war against al-Qaida and victory will be on ours." Meantime, the US embassy in al-Riyadh announced it will re-open its doors today ( Saturday ) after it was closed last week for security reasons. However, an American diplomat said "we can not rule out the occurrence of other attacks."
