Al-Hakim deplores the Accountability legislation against Syria
Regional-Syria, Politics, 11/15/2003
Member of the Interim Governing Council and Head of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Hakim said the U.S. Congress vote for the so-called Syria Accountability Act was unfair and over unsubstantiated accusations.
Sheikh Hakim added in press statements published in Kuwait Friday that Syria didn't have the role for which it was accused by American circles and subsequently such accusations were not accurate.
The Sheikh said that the latest meeting of the foreign ministers of Iraq's neighboring countries was a good and correct step, stressing it was positive that Iraq's friendly neighbors meet to discuss the Iraqi issue.
In Ottawa, Canada, the "Truth" Magazine said in its latest edition that the Congressional Act against Syria was approved because of the country's pan-Arab and national stances in defense of Arab legitimate causes, adding that Damascus seeks just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East while Israel, through its daily hostile practices, is not serious about the peace process.
In Cairo, Al-Akhbar Egyptian daily newspaper described the Act as a dangerous and suspicious escalation of the situation in the region.
It added that if the U.S. was serious about establishing peace and security in the region it should move actively to pressure Israel into abiding by the international resolutions.
In Beirut, the Excellent Jaafari Mufti, Sheikh, Abdulamir Kabalan, denounced the Act, stressing that American accusations against Syria were false and aims at weakening the country's position in defense of the Arab states.
Sheikh Kabalan reiterated in Friday Noon Prayers his Lebanon's rejection of suspicious plots to settle the Palestinian refugees in host countries, calling for opposing such plans.
