Maher expects Bush to delay implementation of Syria Accountability Act
Egypt-USA, Politics, 11/13/2003

Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher expected Wednesday that US President George W. Bush would delay the implementation of the "Syria Accountability Act."

The US legislation, which has not become law, and is expected to be modified by Congress, before presented for the US president.

In statements, Maher said that the law to impose sanctions on Syria is not useful and cannot serve the desire by the US and Syrian parties to iron out their differences.

He expressed hope that both parties would rather opt for dialogue.

The Egyptian top diplomat ruled out that Israel would cash in on the situation and launch a military strike against Syria.

The Foreign Minister said that the Israelis now feel that their policies have failed to achieve peace and security, so much so that the Israeli Chief of Staff and Defence Minister have started talking about ways to ease the lives of Palestinians and about a deal with Hezbollah.
