US Congress delegation describes discussions in Syria as very good
Syria-USA, Politics, 11/12/2003

Member of the U.S. Congress and Chairman of the U.S. Congress delegation, James Colby has described his discussions with President Bashar al-Assad and with Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara as' Very Good'.

Talks during the meeting with Syrian officials dealt with the regional and international developments, particularly the situations in the occupied Palestinian lands and Iraq and the bilateral relations between the two countries, especially the issues on which there is controversy.

President al-Assad indicated the importance of constructive dialogue in the communication with the others under all conditions, pointing out that "we in Syria always look for bright points," recalling Syria's distinguished status historically. The President also pointed out to the importance of justice regarding common interests of the nations and not at the expense of another party.

As for Iraq, the President stressed the necessity of ending the suffering of Iraq's people and their right to establish stability and independence by themselves.

The President emphasized Syria's keen in establishing just and comprehensive peace in the region, pointing out to the importance of the American role in the peace process in the region.

The delegation pointed out that the imminent arrival of the new American ambassador in Damascus stresses the U.S. belief in the importance of the relation with Syria.

Al-Shara stressed Syria's keenness to establish positive relations with the U.S. on the basis of mutual respect to help deal objectively with the problems which the region suffers from on the basis of the international resolutions.

In a statement to press in Damascus yesterday, he said that the US knows definitely that Syria has an important role in the peace process in the Middle East.

He added that there are essential differences between the US and the Syrian policies but we believe that dialogue is the only solution to improve the relations between the two countries.

"We discussed bilateral issues particularly the issue of terrorism which not only threatens the security of US but also the security of Syria and all states in the world," Colby added.

Colby concluded his press conference by saying "We want to push relations between the United States and Syria forward and to develop these relations and I believe that is why we are here."
