Garang invites the Arab League to attend peace talks

The southern rebels of Sudan led by John Garang extended an invitation to the Arab League to attend the peace talks it carried out with the Sudanese government in Nivasha suburb near Nairobi, suspended until after the holy month of Ramadan.

The movement's deputy chairman Sylva Keir, currently visiting Egypt following a meeting with the secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa "we have extended an invitation to the secretary general in order to have an AL delegation attending the talks as an observer and to attend the final agreement signing ceremony."

A source said that Samir Hosni, the officials responsible for Sudan's file at the Arab League will preside over the delegation and that the delegation will head for southern Sudan after Eid al-Fiter (Ramadan holiday) to convene meetings with the southern leadership and to discuss the possibility of the Arab League contribution to developmental projects there.

On September 25th, the movement and the Sudanese government reached a security agreement on ways of deploying their armed forces during a provisional period that lasts for 6 years.

On the other hand, the American embassy in Khartoum expressed regret over the decision taken by Khartoum, according to which, according to the embassy, prevented American officials from heading to the southern Darfour estate in west Sudan to carry out a humanitarian mission. The statement read "the American embassy regrets banning the charge de affairs and other representatives at the embassy and the American agency for international Aids ( US Aid ) from carrying out this visit."
